As the elected Secretary of the DECM Block Association, a volunteer group in Bushwick, I helped raise funds and deliver aid to families in southwestern Puerto Rico affected by the January 2020 earthquakes

Achievements

Raised $1450+ from 30+ donors
Delivered aid to 40+ earthquake survivors

The city of Yauco was one of those affected by powerful tremors that began January 7, 2020
Damaged properties were assessed for safety but not all who were left unhoused had been relocated by February
We approached people living in temporary shelters and asked them directly what they needed
We prepared bags with essential toiletries in advance – in hindsight, we're glad we included hand sanitizer and soap
With $1450 in donations from our Brooklyn network, we purchased a variety of materials and delivered them to families
Many told us they appreciated our approach – we bypassed third parties and delivered benefits directly to them
